Description

A Practical Workhorse BCG for the Large-Frame AR

The Toolcraft .308 / 7.62×51 Black Nitride Bolt Carrier Group is a complete operating assembly for compatible large-frame AR rifles using the standard .308-size bolt face. It combines a full-mass 8620-steel carrier with a shot-peened, magnetic-particle-inspected 9310 bolt and the components required for installation into a compatible upper receiver.

This is the straightforward Toolcraft configuration for a builder who values proven materials, proper gas-key assembly and a durable low-maintenance finish more than decorative machining or branding. Forward-assist serrations allow it to function with compatible upper receivers equipped with a forward assist.

Why Black Nitride Makes Sense on a Working Rifle

The bolt, carrier and cam pin receive a black nitride treatment. Unlike a thick plated coating applied over the steel, nitriding modifies the surface of the component to create a hard, corrosion-resistant exterior while preserving the underlying dimensions.

The resulting surface is smooth, dark and relatively easy to clean, making black nitride a practical choice for a hunting rifle, range rifle or general-purpose .308 AR. It also avoids the bright appearance of nickel boron while maintaining a cleaner and more finished surface than a basic exterior phosphate treatment.

Black nitride does not eliminate the need for lubrication. The bolt, cam-pin path, carrier rails and gas-ring contact surfaces should still be lubricated according to the firearm manufacturer’s instructions, particularly during initial break-in.

9310 Bolt with MPI Inspection

Toolcraft machines the bolt from 9310 alloy steel and shot peens it to improve resistance to fatigue at heavily stressed areas such as the locking lugs. The completed bolt is magnetic-particle inspected to check for surface and near-surface discontinuities that may not be visible during an ordinary visual inspection.

The bolt assembly uses a shot-peened, hardened D2 tool-steel extractor, extractor O-ring and three gas rings. These components work together to maintain extraction force, gas sealing and reliable unlocking as the operating system cycles.

Full-Mass 8620 Carrier and Properly Staked Gas Key

The heavy-duty carrier is machined from 8620 steel and uses a full-mass profile appropriate for a conventional large-frame direct-impingement operating system. The added mass works with the rifle’s gas system, recoil spring and buffer to control the timing of extraction and return the bolt into battery.

The hardened 4140 gas key is chrome lined internally and secured with Grade 8 screws. Toolcraft stakes the screws with a heavy strike to resist loosening under repeated firing and thermal cycling. Proper gas-key sealing and secure fasteners are critical because leakage or movement at this joint can cause short-stroking and inconsistent cycling.

The assembly also includes an 8620-steel black-nitride cam pin and a centerless-ground 8740-steel firing pin with a hard-chrome finish.

Complete and Ready for Inspection, Lubrication and Installation

This is a complete bolt carrier group rather than a stripped carrier. It includes the carrier, bolt, extractor, ejector, gas key, cam pin, firing pin and firing-pin retaining pin.

Before installation, clean away any storage preservative or packaging residue, inspect the components and apply suitable firearm lubricant. Confirm that the gas rings provide resistance, the extractor moves correctly, the firing pin travels freely and the bolt rotates completely into and out of the locked position.

Large-Frame AR Compatibility Is Not Universal

Large-frame AR rifles do not share one universal commercial specification. The terms “AR-10,” “LR-308,” “DPMS pattern” and “.308 AR” are often used interchangeably in product descriptions even though receivers, barrel extensions, charging handles and other components can vary between manufacturers.

This BCG is intended for compatible DPMS/LR-308-pattern large-frame upper receiver groups. It is not intended for the smaller DPMS GII system or proprietary rifles that require a manufacturer-specific carrier assembly. Verify compatibility with the upper receiver, barrel extension and firing system before ordering.

The bolt-face dimensions are associated with .308 Winchester and 7.62×51 NATO. Other cartridges based on the .308 Winchester case may use the same general bolt face, but compatibility still depends on the barrel, chamber, magazine, gas system and specifications of the complete rifle.

Headspace Must Be Verified

Headspace is established by the relationship between the bolt and barrel extension. Whenever a bolt is paired with a barrel that has not already been checked with that exact bolt, the assembled firearm should be inspected with the correct headspace gauges before live ammunition is fired.

Do not attempt to correct excessive resistance by forcing the bolt into battery. Stop and verify receiver, barrel-extension, bolt and ammunition compatibility before proceeding.

Direct Toolcraft Supply and Lifetime Warranty

Huckleberry Arms purchases these bolt carrier groups in bulk directly from Toolcraft. Minor handling or contact marks may occasionally be visible from bulk packaging and transportation. These cosmetic marks do not affect the fit, function or performance of the carrier group.

Toolcraft manufactures its carriers at its facility in Marion, North Carolina and covers its products with a lifetime replacement warranty under the manufacturer’s applicable terms.
